FDA authorizes first AI tech for visualizing coronary inflammation in CT scans

Cardiac imaging experts have been anticipating this news for quite some time. The belief is that it could help transform how clinicians evaluate cardiovascular risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted marketing authorization for the first artificial intelligence technology designed to visualize coronary inflammation directly from standard CT scans.

The software works by analyzing existing CT images to detect subtle changes in the fat tissue surrounding the coronary arteries. When arteries become inflamed, that nearby fat tissue undergoes measurable alterations that the human eye cannot reliably see. The AI algorithm identifies these patterns and produces a color-coded map showing areas of active inflammation.

This matters because coronary artery inflammation is a key driver of heart attacks, yet it has been difficult to assess without invasive procedures or specialized imaging. Traditional CT scans can show plaque buildup and blockages, but they do not reveal whether the vessel walls are inflamed. The new tool adds a layer of functional insight to the structural picture.

Clinical studies submitted to the FDA showed that patients with high inflammation scores on the AI analysis had a significantly higher risk of major cardiac events over the following years, even after accounting for traditional risk factors like cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Researchers involved in the trials say this could help identify high-risk patients who might otherwise be overlooked.

The authorization opens the door for wider adoption in hospitals and imaging centers. Cardiologists will need training to interpret the new data, and insurance coverage remains an open question. But for now, the technology represents a shift toward using artificial intelligence not just to find blockages, but to understand the underlying biology driving heart disease.
