Iridium Communications has finalized its acquisition of Aireon, pulling the aircraft-tracking venture fully under its own umbrella. The move comes just ahead of Iridium's planned $8 billion sale to Rocket Lab, a deal that will reshape the satellite communications landscape.
Aireon, which provides global real-time surveillance of aircraft using Iridium's satellite network, had been a joint venture between Iridium and several air navigation service providers. By bringing the service in-house, Iridium is streamlining its operations and positioning the aviation safety business as a core part of the package being sold to Rocket Lab. The integration is expected to simplify the transition for customers and regulators alike.
The transaction with Rocket Lab, announced earlier this year, is set to close in the coming months. For Rocket Lab, the acquisition represents a major leap into the satellite services market, adding a mature, revenue-generating business to its existing launch and space systems portfolio. Iridium's low-earth orbit constellation, already known for its global coverage and reliability, will become a key asset for the company as it expands beyond rocket manufacturing.
Industry analysts see the Aireon integration as a logical step. It removes the complexity of a joint venture structure and gives the new owner full control over a service that has become critical for air traffic management over oceans and remote regions. With the deal pending, both companies are working to ensure a smooth handover.
