After growing up across countries, I knew I wanted my kids to be multilingual — fluent in Dutch, German, and English from birth. The decision to raise children in a multilingual environment is often met with skepticism, but it can be a rewarding experience. Many believe that learning multiple languages simultaneously may confuse children, but research shows that children are remarkably adept at picking up languages during their formative years.

In our household, we have established a routine that immerses our children in each language. We designate specific times for speaking Dutch, German, and English, ensuring that they receive ample exposure to each language. Storytime, music, and everyday conversations are all tailored to incorporate these languages, making learning both natural and enjoyable.

The benefits of multilingualism extend beyond mere communication. Studies indicate that children who speak multiple languages often display enhanced cognitive abilities, improved problem-solving skills, and greater cultural awareness. As our children grow, we are excited to see how their multilingual skills will shape their identities and open doors to diverse opportunities in the future.
