Songwriters Hall of Fame: Taylor Swift, Raye Sound Off on Music Business

The 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony turned into a night of candid industry critique as Taylor Swift, Alanis Morissette, and British artist Raye each used their acceptance speeches to call out the business side of music. The gala, held in New York City, honored a diverse class of songwriters, but the most memorable moments came from the performers themselves.

Swift, who was inducted alongside Morissette, delivered a sharp address about the financial pressures facing modern songwriters. She noted that streaming has fundamentally changed how creators are compensated, arguing that the current model often leaves artists struggling to make a living from their work alone. "We are told to be grateful for exposure, but exposure does not pay the rent," Swift said, drawing applause from the audience of industry veterans.

Morissette echoed similar frustrations, reflecting on her own decades-long career. She warned that the industry's focus on viral moments and short-term trends undermines the craft of songwriting. "We are not content factories," she said. "We are people who spend years trying to say something true, and that truth is being devalued."

Raye, who has been outspoken about her battles with record labels, took a more direct approach. She described the "soul-crushing" experience of having her creative control stripped away early in her career. "I was told my songs were not commercial enough, that I needed to fit a mold," she said. "But the mold was suffocating me." Her speech received a standing ovation.

The evening also featured performances and tributes to other inductees, but the overarching theme was clear: songwriters want more than just a trophy. They want a sustainable future for their art. As Swift put it, "The song is the only thing that lasts. Everything else is just noise."
