Governor Greg Abbott has introduced a plan to tighten regulations on data centers operating in Texas, pointing to their growing strain on the state's power grid and the rising costs passed on to everyday residents. The proposal comes as the number of large-scale computing facilities continues to climb, driven by demand from cloud services and artificial intelligence.
Abbott's office argues that these centers consume massive amounts of electricity, often without contributing enough to local infrastructure or grid stability. Under the proposed rules, new data centers would face stricter requirements for energy efficiency and could be required to invest in backup power sources or grid improvements. The goal is to prevent spikes in residential electricity bills that some communities have already started to see.
The governor also wants more transparency from data center operators about their energy use. Critics have long said that these facilities get tax breaks and other incentives while leaving local utilities to cover the costs of upgrading transmission lines and substations. Supporters of the industry warn that too much regulation could drive investment to other states.
A public comment period is expected before any formal legislation is drafted. The proposal is likely to spark debate in the next legislative session, as Texas balances its reputation as a business-friendly state with the need to keep energy affordable for families.
