Treasury Department repeals Biden-era reporting requirement for US businesses

The U.S. Treasury Department has formally scrapped a rule that forced American companies and individuals to file beneficial ownership data with its Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, known as FinCEN. The move, announced Tuesday, ends a requirement that had been in place since 2021 under the Corporate Transparency Act, which was part of a broader anti-money laundering push during the previous administration.

Under that rule, most small businesses and many sole proprietors had to submit personal details about their owners, including names, addresses, and identification numbers. The goal was to unmask shell companies used for hiding illicit funds. But critics argued the mandate was an unnecessary burden on millions of law-abiding firms, especially mom-and-pop operations with no connection to financial crime.

The Treasury's decision follows months of legal challenges and growing pressure from business groups and lawmakers who said the reporting system was costly, confusing, and prone to privacy risks. Treasury officials stated that the repeal will reduce red tape and allow companies to focus on growth rather than paperwork. They also noted that law enforcement still has other tools to track suspicious financial activity.

The change takes effect immediately, meaning no new filings are required. Existing submissions will be purged from FinCEN's database, and the agency will stop accepting any related forms. Businesses that had already filed will not face penalties for past noncompliance, and the government will not pursue enforcement actions tied to the old rule.

This repeal is part of a wider effort to roll back regulations seen as hindering economic activity. Supporters of the original rule, however, warn that dropping it could make it easier for criminals to launder money through anonymous entities. For now, the practical impact is clear: millions of U.S. business owners no longer have to worry about this particular filing deadline.
