When I moved to San Francisco after college, I signed a lease with three strangers I met online. So far, it's been easier than living with friends. That might sound counterintuitive, but after a year of navigating shared rent, chores, and quiet hours with people I barely knew, I've come to see the upside.
The biggest advantage is the lack of emotional baggage. With friends, every dirty dish or late-night noise can feel like a personal slight. You worry about hurting feelings or damaging the friendship. With strangers, you set clear boundaries from day one. You write a chore chart. You agree on guest policies. You talk about money without awkwardness because there's no history to protect.
There is also the freedom to be yourself without judgment. You don't have to pretend you're still the person you were in college. You can be quiet, messy, or weird in ways your old friends might not recognize. And when conflicts come up, you handle them like adults, not like people who once shared a dorm room.
Of course, it's not all smooth. You might end up with someone who leaves moldy food in the fridge or plays music at 2 a.m. But those problems are fixable with a conversation. The risk of losing a friend over rent is gone.
Living with strangers taught me that friendship and cohabitation don't have to go together. Sometimes, a clean lease and a locked door are better than a shared history.
