With no special session in sight, northern Minnesota businesses wait on wildfire aid

State officials have confirmed they will not call the Legislature back for a special session to extend the peacetime emergency declaration tied to this fall's devastating wildfires. That decision likely pushes any meaningful economic assistance for affected businesses into next year, leaving many owners in a costly holding pattern.

The emergency order had unlocked certain state resources and streamlined some federal aid pathways, but its expiration means those tools are now off the table. Without a new session, lawmakers cannot vote on a supplemental disaster relief package, and the normal budget process won't resume until January at the earliest. For small towns along the Boundary Waters and in the Iron Range, that timeline feels like an eternity.

Restaurants, outfitters, and lodging operators who lost weeks of peak season revenue are now staring down winter bills with no clear promise of reimbursement. Some have burned through savings just to cover payroll and basic repairs. Others are holding off on reordering inventory or booking spring staff, unsure if they can afford to reopen at full capacity.

Local chambers of commerce have sent repeated letters to the governor's office, but the response has been polite and noncommittal. The message, as one business owner put it, is that the state sees the damage but cannot move faster than its own calendar. Meanwhile, federal disaster loans exist, but they require a formal disaster declaration that also needs state sign-off, which is now stalled.
