BUSINESS ‘Punk, intense and all-encompassing’: Chicagoan Dawn Heilung brings trans artists into focus

Chicago artist and organizer Dawn Heilung has spent years collecting labels: queer, bisexual, pansexual, polyamorous, trans, non-binary, transfeminine. But they are quick to say that no single word fully captures their experience. That sense of complexity and refusal to be boxed in is exactly what drove them to found Gender Fucked Productions in 2022.

The nonprofit focuses on arts and event production for trans, non-binary, and queer creators. Heilung describes the work as "punk, intense and all-encompassing." It is not just about putting on a show. It is about building a space where artists who are often pushed to the margins can take up as much room as they need.

Since launching, Gender Fucked has hosted a range of events, from performance nights to visual art showcases. The goal is to give trans artists a platform that is not filtered through the lens of mainstream expectations. Heilung wants the work to feel raw and honest, even when it is messy.

For Heilung, the project is deeply personal. They know what it is like to feel invisible in creative spaces. They also know that visibility alone is not enough. The real work is about creating structures where trans artists can lead, experiment, and fail without losing their footing.

The response has been strong. Audiences are showing up, and artists are finding community. Heilung hopes to keep expanding, bringing more voices into the fold and proving that trans art is not a niche. It is a vital part of the cultural landscape.
