Weirton’s Park Drive corridor sees new business and expanded health care development

Weirton's Park Drive corridor is seeing a fresh wave of activity, with new businesses opening, housing options growing, and health care services expanding. City officials say this is just the beginning, as several more projects are in the pipeline for the area.

The latest additions include a mix of retail and service-oriented businesses that have moved into previously vacant storefronts. At the same time, a local health care provider has completed an expansion that adds new examination rooms and diagnostic equipment, aiming to reduce the need for residents to travel outside the city for routine care.

Housing development is also picking up, with a small batch of townhomes now under construction near the corridor's midpoint. According to the city's planning office, these units are designed to appeal to both younger professionals and older residents looking to downsize without leaving the neighborhood.

Mayor Harold Miller said the corridor has long been underutilized, but that is changing. "We have seen steady interest from developers over the past year," he said. "The infrastructure is already here, and the location is convenient. Now we are seeing that translate into real investment."

One challenge remains parking, especially near the busier intersections. City council is reviewing options for shared lots and possible street reconfiguration. A public meeting on the topic is scheduled for next month.

Local business owners are optimistic. The owner of a new coffee shop said foot traffic has been better than expected, and she credits the mix of new residents and health care visitors. "People are here for different reasons, but they all stop in," she said.

No major road closures are planned, but drivers should expect some lane shifts as utility work continues through the summer. The city expects the next round of announcements about new tenants within a few weeks.
