NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Even though the United States men's national team has been knocked out of the tournament, the World Cup is still delivering a noticeable economic bump for bars, restaurants, and sports venues across Connecticut. With the quarterfinals now in full swing, local business owners report that fan enthusiasm has not faded.
At Trinity Bar in New Haven, manager Luis Rodriguez said the crowd for the Brazil versus Croatia match was nearly as large as any U.S. game. "People still love the sport," he said. "We have a lot of international customers, and the atmosphere is electric no matter who is playing." Similar scenes are playing out in Hartford, Stamford, and other cities where soccer fans from diverse backgrounds gather to support their home countries.
The boost is a welcome relief for hospitality businesses that typically see a lull between the holiday season and the new year. Some establishments have extended their hours and added special menus for the remaining matches. While the U.S. exit was a disappointment for many, the global appeal of the tournament continues to draw crowds. For Connecticut bars, the World Cup is far from over.
