Five cannabis industry leaders, ranging from a legacy grower with decades of experience to actor and farmer Jim Belushi, recently sat down to debate a surprisingly thorny question: does a distinct "cannabis culture" actually exist, and if so, what does it mean for companies trying to sell products?
The conversation revealed a sharp divide. On one side, the argument is that cannabis culture is a living, breathing thing. It grew out of prohibition, underground clubs, and a shared set of values around freedom, wellness, and community. For these people, the culture is not just about getting high. It is about a relationship with the plant that includes ritual, respect for the land, and a certain anti-establishment spirit that has survived legalization.
On the other side, some panelists argued that what people call cannabis culture today is mostly a commercial invention. They pointed to the slick packaging, the lifestyle branding, and the endless stream of "stoner" stereotypes in advertising. In their view, big money has hollowed out the original meaning and replaced it with something that sells, but does not truly connect.
For the business side, the stakes are high. Brands that lean too hard into a fake version of the culture risk looking out of touch. But brands that ignore it completely may miss the emotional pull that keeps customers loyal. The panel seemed to agree on one point: authenticity is hard to fake, and investors should watch how a company treats its roots, not just its revenue numbers.
The real takeaway might be that cannabis culture is not one thing. It is a spectrum, from the old-school grower who values craft above all, to the new consumer who just wants a reliable gummy after work. The winning brands will likely be the ones that understand the difference and speak to both without pretending they are the same.
