As the Lloyd Center prepares to close later this year, business owners within the longtime Portland shopping destination are searching for their next storefront. Many tenants, including the iconic ice rink, have confirmed they intend to stay open and operating right up until the mall's final day of business.
The ice rink, a central fixture of the mall for decades, has been a gathering spot for families, skaters, and community events. Its management stated that shutting down early would not make sense, as the rink remains a popular draw. Other retailers and food vendors in the mall echoed that sentiment, noting that a sudden closure would disrupt their customer base and revenue.
However, the countdown has prompted a scramble for new locations. Several small business owners say they are in active negotiations with landlords in nearby neighborhoods, though rising commercial rents in Portland present a challenge. Some are considering pop-up spaces or online-only models as a temporary solution.
The mall's ownership has not released an exact closure date, but tenants have been told to plan for a shutdown by late summer. For now, the concourses remain busy with shoppers and skaters making the most of the remaining months. The Lloyd Center's end marks the close of an era for Portland retail, but the businesses inside are determined to keep their doors open until the very last customer leaves.
