Mesa businesses struggle as Val Vista Drive roadwork drags on

For months, the rumble of heavy machinery and the sight of orange cones have become the new normal along a busy stretch of Val Vista Drive in Mesa. But for the small business owners lining this corridor, the prolonged roadwork is more than an inconvenience -- it is a direct threat to their livelihoods.

The construction project, aimed at widening the road and upgrading aging infrastructure, was originally scheduled to wrap up by late summer. Now, with delays pushing the completion date into the fall, several shopkeepers report a sharp drop in foot traffic and sales. "We have lost about 40 percent of our regular customers," said one local cafe owner, who asked not to be named. "People see the barriers and the dust, and they just drive to the next intersection."

The problem is compounded by limited signage directing drivers to open businesses. Some storefronts are partially blocked by construction equipment, making them nearly invisible from the road. A nearby hardware store manager noted that even loyal patrons are frustrated by the constant detours and lack of parking. "We had a customer yesterday who circled the block three times before giving up," he said.

City officials acknowledge the delays, citing unexpected utility relocations and weather issues. They have promised to improve communication with business owners and to install clearer wayfinding signs. But for many, the damage is already done. With rent and payroll still due, some are now questioning whether they can survive until the asphalt is finally smooth again.
