Plum business owners to host backpack drive, free back-to-school haircuts

A new back-to-school event in Plum is offering more than just notebooks and pencils this summer. On August 17, students from kindergarten through 12th grade can head to the Unity Volunteer Fire Station on Old Leechburg Road to pick up school supplies and get a fresh haircut from local barbers and stylists.

The event is organized by Patyn McCune, owner of Lelulo's, a local business. McCune said the idea came from wanting to ease the financial pressure on families as the new school year approaches. "A backpack and a haircut might seem small, but they make a big difference for a kid walking into class on the first day," McCune said.

Volunteer barbers and stylists will offer free custom haircuts on a first-come, first-served basis. School supplies will be handed out while they last. Organizers are still accepting donations of backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and other supplies. Anyone interested in contributing can drop off items at Lelulo's or contact the shop directly.

The drive runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No registration is required. Families are asked to bring their children to the fire station during those hours. McCune hopes the event becomes an annual tradition in Plum.
