Teen on Kauaʻi with Down Syndrome turns beach sand messages into business

A simple family tradition on the shores of Kauai has grown into a real business for a young woman with Down syndrome. Katrina Louise Martinez and her daughter, Ella Joy Martinez, started writing messages in the sand as a way to spread kindness. What began as a sweet habit has now become Sand Scribletz, a company that turns temporary beach art into lasting memories.

Ella, a teenager who loves the ocean and her community, would carefully carve words like "Aloha" and "Be Happy" into the wet sand near the waterline. Tourists and locals alike would stop to take photos, often asking if they could request their own custom message. Seeing the joy this brought to others, Katrina helped Ella turn the idea into a business.

Sand Scribletz offers personalized sand writing for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or just to surprise someone. The team uses simple tools and their hands to create large, clear lettering in the sand. After the photo is taken, the tide washes the message away, leaving only the memory and the digital image.

Ella takes an active role in the company, from helping to design the messages to greeting customers. Her mother says the business has given Ella a sense of purpose and independence. It also shows that a disability does not limit a person's ability to create, connect, and succeed. For Ella, the best part is seeing people smile when they see their name written in the sand. The business continues to grow, proving that a simple act of kindness can become something much bigger.
