I had no experience with how to handle such things, so when the ticket agent told me to move off to the side and wait for them to find another flight, I just stood there. The terminal was buzzing with the usual chaos, but our corner felt strangely quiet. The airline had just announced it was ceasing all operations immediately. No warning. No backup plan. Just a sudden stop.
For those of us holding tickets, the confusion hit first. The agent, looking as stunned as we were, explained that the company had no funds to rebook us. There was no partner airline stepping in. The credit card chargebacks would take weeks, and the hotel vouchers were worthless. I watched a family with three kids try to figure out how to get home. They had spent their savings on these tickets.
The reality is that when an airline goes under, the government does not always step in to save the passengers. In many countries, you are simply left to fend for yourself. Travel insurance becomes the only lifeline, but only if you bought it before the news broke. The best advice I got was from a stranger in the same situation: call your credit card company immediately. Dispute the charge. Then book a new ticket with a different carrier, even if it costs more. Do not wait for the airline to fix it. They are gone. You are not.
