A cardiologist in New York has become the first in the United States to use a newly cleared imaging device during a coronary procedure. The technology, called the OpusWave Dual Sensor Imaging system, was recently given clearance by the FDA and is now being used in clinical settings.
The system works by capturing two different types of images at the same time. It combines intravascular ultrasound, or IVUS, with optical frequency domain imaging, known as OFDI. These two methods give doctors a more complete view of the coronary arteries. IVUS uses sound waves to see the structure of the artery walls, while OFDI uses light to create high-resolution images of the inner surface. Having both views together helps doctors see details they might miss with just one method.
The first procedure was performed at a hospital in New York City. The patient was being treated for a blocked artery. The doctor used the new system to guide the placement of a stent. The dual images allowed for better assessment of the plaque buildup and the size of the artery. This can lead to more precise treatment and potentially better outcomes for patients.
The developer of the OpusWave system says the technology is designed to improve decision-making during complex heart procedures. By seeing both the structure and the surface details of the artery at the same time, doctors can avoid complications and make sure stents are placed correctly. The company plans to make the system available at more hospitals across the country in the coming months.
